NEWP’s Peshtigo Flowage Weekend has become an annual getaway of paddling, camping and a big potluck cookout. The flowage is where the raging “Pesh” is tamed into a beautiful lake surrounded by wilderness-like rocky beauty. Despite on-and-off rain most of the weekend, we enjoyed a great time at Governor Thompson State Park and on the waters of the flowage.
On Friday, three NEWP members (Angela, Ken and Mike) got an early start to the weekend by paddling the Roaring Rapids whitewater section of the Pesh.
On Saturday we launched from Landing #13 for a 9.7-mile round trip paddle with a stop for lunch at Landing #12, where the river enters the impoundment. A gentle rain began around 11:30 but it didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of our 21 paddlers.
Saturday evening we gathered at the Woods Lake picnic shelter for a brat and burger cookout. Members brought various side dishes and desserts to make it a terrific feast.
Our Sunday trip was a bit different from prior year trips. 24 paddlers launched from Landing #7 and paddled north to Doc’s for a 5.7-mile round trip. This gave us the opportunity to explore the beautiful upstream areas. The weather was overcast but once again we enjoyed calm water and another beautiful day of exploring the flowage.
Shout-outs to Jeff Mazanec for organizing, Scott Oftedahl for helping with registration and grilling, and to everyone who took part in a great weekend.
