Memorial services in honor of long-term NEWP member David J. Horst, Jr., will be held May 2, 2026, at the Bubolz Nature Preserve.
Many in the paddling community mourn the loss of Dave Horst, an avid outdoorsman, conservationist and paddler whose efforts will impact northeast Wisconsin for generations. In the paddle community, Dave’s contributions to planning and facilitating educational and exciting group paddle events fostered memorable and fun experiences on the water for hundreds of paddlers.
An avid birder with camera always ready, Dave spotted an eagle on nearly every one of more than 120 NEWP and Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Paddle events over nearly 20 years. He was also the force behind special add-ons that elevated many “just a paddle trips” into something truly memorable.
Some will remember the tours he arranged of the Aldo Leopold Shack during lunch breaks while paddling down the Wisconsin River, and a visit by a John Muir reenactor after completing a trip on the Upper Fox River. Other enriching add-ons included a Native drum circle in Montello, a conservationist overview of the Terrell Island experience with the American white pelican, aquatic invasive species education, tours through the Fox River Navigational System Authority locks on the Lower Fox River and many others.
Although Dave will be missed as we continue our on-water adventures, his cultural, environmental and historical influences will continue to enhance our paddle trips for years to come.
